‘Economic recovery began last year, but finances far from healthy’

The worldwide financial and economic crisis took a heavy toll on Dutch government finances in 2010 as well as in 2009, according to the finance ministry’s annual report, published on Thursday.

‘Although we have not yet regained pre-crisis levels, the figures show we are heading in the right direction. The economy has improved slightly, but government finances are still far from healthy,’ finance minister Jan Kees de Jager said in a statement.
‘In order to leave the crisis permanently behind us, implementation of the measures of the coalition agreement – the €18bn in spending cuts – is crucial. By intervening now we do not let future generations foot the bill.’
However, the results are not as bad as forecast in the annual budget, when zero economic growth was predicted. In terms of the EMU balance and EMU debt, the Dutch economic performance in 2010 was still ‘mediocre’, but above average compared with other European countries.
