‘Diplomats to travel economy class’

Foreign affairs minister Uri Rosenthal is planning to cut spending on diplomatic travel, by shifting ambassadors and embassy staff to economy class on planes, sources have told the Telegraaf.

At the moment, embassy officials and their families can travel first class once a year.
Foreign ministry staff are also entitled to travel first class on long-distance journeys but they will be limited to economy class tickets, the paper says.
The minister is also considering reducing the budgets embassies are given to house staff and to reduce ‘danger payments’ for people working in difficult areas.
A majority of MPs had already called on the minister to cut spending on travel as part of his efforts to reduce the budget by tens of millions of euros.
