Tristan van der Vlis, the young man who shot dead six people at a shopping centre in Alphen aan den Rijn on Saturday, was wearing a bullet-proof vest, the public prosecution department said.

Van der Vlis used a semi-automatic weapon and a hand gun on his killing spree, which ended when he shot himself.
Initial reports had suggested the 24-year-old used an automatic weapon, which are illegal in the Netherlands.

Investigation
Police and forensic experts are still piecing together what happened when Van der Vlis went on the rampage through the busy centre.
A number of people remain in hospital and at least one is still in a critical condition.
The state information service said on Wednesday queen Beatrix and crown prince Willem-Alexander will attend a memorial service for the victims next week.

Gun clubs
Meanwhile, Trouw reports that the Dutch gun club association is planning to launch a new membership drive amongst under school pupils this autumn.
Van der Vlis was a member of a gun club and had a licence for five weapons.
The Alphen aan den Rijn shooting is no reason to halt the campaign, chairman Sander Duisterhof told Trouw.
‘Many youngsters shoot air rifles in their parents’ attic or go to a fair to use guns,’ he said. ‘We want to take away that secrecy. It’s better if they shoot under supervision rather than experiment.’
Dutch gun clubs have some 42,000 members, of whom 1,500 are minors, Trouw said.
