Religious village wants sniffer dogs to beat drugs

The local council for the former island of Urk wants to introduce sniffer dogs to make sure the village-wide ban on marijuana is upheld, the Telegraaf reports.

The council in the strongly religious village wants the dogs to make sure soft drugs are not used in cafes and other places where teenagers hang out, the paper said.
This is despite the fact justice minister Ivo Opstelten has warned the council it cannot declare the entire village a drugs-free zone.
Drugs dogs are also in use in the West-Friesland town of Enkhuizen, the paper says. However, there no action is taken against people found with less than five grammes of marijuana – in line with national guidelines.
