Police chiefs want tougher rules for guns

Police chiefs want changes to Dutch weapons laws in the wake of the shopping centre shooting in Alphen aan den Rijn earlier this month.

‘We need to find a good balance between the rights of people to shoot as a hobby and public safety,’ Zeeland police chief Letty Demmers told television show Nieuwsuur.
In particular, they say the age for membership of a gun club should go up from 12 to 18 and that members should be banned from taking ammunition home.
The young man who shot six people dead and then turned a gun on himself was a gun club member and had a licence for five weapons, despite having a history of mental illness.
