Ministers drive cars from ‘bonus’ company

Finance minister Jan Kees de Jager drives a car leased from Leaseplan, the company that angered MPs on Tuesday when its banking arm announced hefty bonuses for its three-member executive board, the Volkskrant reports on Thursday.

The car lease company with a banking licence has had a €6.5bn loan guarantee from the state since 2008.
Leaseplan also provides 2,200 cars to the government, including 30 cars for ministers and senior civil servants. Other ministers who drive them are defence minister Hans Hillen and justice minister Ivo Opstelten, reports the Volkskrant.
MPs want the government to change the rules covering the choice of car leasing companies to include not only price but also social and sustainability criteria.
