Japanese ship reaches Rotterdam, checked for radioactivity

Thursday 14 April 2011

The first container ship to sail from Japan to Rotterdam since the nuclear disaster at Fukushima docked on Thursday morning and will undergo a thorough check for radioactivity.

The ship, the Carsten Maersk, has already undergone a radioactivity check during a stop-off at the British port of Felixstowe, reports the Algemeen Dagblad.

Of the 1,200 containers on board, 380 come from Japan. These contain electronic equipment but no food.

More ships from Japan are due in Rotterdam at the weekend, all of which will undergo the same checks.
