Holland climbs animal cruelty list

Tuesday 19 April 2011

The Netherlands has climbed two places on the annual list of the worst countries for animal abuse presented by the animal rights group Dierenhulp.

The Netheralnds moved from 6th to 4th place because of the way it treats sick horses, the internet trade in live animals and the granting of hunting licences to members of the royal family, reports the Telegraaf.

The numerous reports of abuse and mutilation of ducks, geese, swans, dogs and cats were also take into account.

Top of the list is Greece, followed by Spain and the Dutch Antilles.

The new government plans to install 500 specialist 'animal cops' to combat animal cruelty.

Every case of animal cruelty is one too many. But somehow I doubt this is true. The countries topping this list are exactly those countries in which the Dierenhulp foundation is active.

This list is so absurd. I invite anyone to take a look at the full list in http://www.dierenhulp.nl/html/nl/nieuws.php?id=1303135033 and try to make any sense of it. What kind of data did they use for this list?

Also, why is this news? If I publish a list of nonsense will it go on newspapers too?...

Doesn't catch me off guard after seeing small kids with their parents throwing firecrackers at ducks and swans in the canals during New Year's Eve :(

Hard to believe this kind of behavior coming from enlightened, 'first world' people. What is wrong w/you?

I've never forgotten how, a few years ago, a Dutch 'friend' staying at my house for a night, aggressively attacked me verbally for mentioning animal rights once at the (veggie) meal table. My husband was at the table and very seriously ill (dying) but that didn't deter her. Never experienced anything like that before or since. But I'm sure there are as many cruel places and people around the world so not sure about that list.
