Early spring leads to more hay fever

Hospitals are reporting a surge in hay fever cases this year, following the early spring, the Volkskrant writes on Thursday.

Not only are they dealing with more patients, but the symptoms are more severe, the paper says.
Maria van den Eijnden-Manders of Helmond’s Elkerliek hospital told the paper the amount of birch pollen in the atmosphere is currently 1,600 per m3 – compared with a maximum 600 last year.
There are also more different types of pollen around because the early spring has caused more trees and flowers to bloom at the same time, she said.
