Deportation report ‘does not criticise policy’, says minister

A new report into the deportation of illegal immigrants from the Netherlands does not criticise the way deportations are carried out and supports government policy, immigration minister Gerd Leers said in a briefing for MPs.

The report by the CITT, the body in charge of supervising deportation policy, says of the 6,600 planned deportations in 2010, a third were cancelled because illegal immigrants arrived with the paperwork for a new asylum request or became violent. This is an increase of around 2,000 on 2009.
Leers refutes the figures. He says around 10 illegal immigrants resisted during accompanied deportations and some 225 who were unaccompanied.
The minister is to incorporate some of the report’s recommendations into a new policy document to be published before the summer.
