VVD urges central bank to get tough on bonuses

The central bank should clamp down on banks which pay executives and senior staff excessive bonuses, MPs from the conservative Liberal VVD say in Monday’s Volkskrant.

‘There is a lot of talk but no action,’ VVD MP Matthijs Huizing told the paper. ‘There should be consquences attached to bonuses which encourage unnecessary risk-taking.’
MPs on parliament’s finance committee are due to discuss the banking code of conduct with finance minister Jan Kees de Jager later today.
That code was drawn up by the banks themselves and is based on self-regulation.
On Friday, the Financieele Dagblad said the central bank has told banks, insurance companies and asset managers they must comply with its own regulations on executive pay by March 31. Those rules became enshrined in law last year.
