Tabloids and freebies boost newspaper sales

Smaller formats, giveaways and other promotional activities boosted newspaper sales in the final quarter of last year, according to new figures from the HOI circulation figure institute.

In particular, the Volkskrant benefited from its shift to tabloid, with a 5% increase in paid subscriptions.
The Telegraaf remains the biggest circulation paper in the country with a circulation figure of 565,000, up 2.6% on the year-earlier period.
In total, 3.4 million newspapers are sold in the Netherlands every day. Most are bought via subscription rather than kiosk sales.
