PVV opposes appointment of 'anti-Wilders' judge

Wednesday 09 March 2011

The anti-Islam party PVV is attempting to block the appointment of a Dutch law professor to the High Court because it would be too political, the Telegraaf reports on Wednesday.

The party hopes to force a formal named vote on the appointment of Ybo Buruma in parliament next week.

MP Louis Bontes said the nomination is an ‘enormous scandal’ and accused Buruma of likening PVV leader Geert Wilders to Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini.

Prosecution

‘Buruma shouts and is rewarded. Wilders says something and faces legal action,’ Bontes said, referring to the MP’s prosecution for inciting hatred.

Buruma, a professor at Radboud University in Nijmegen, said it is the PVV’s good right to discuss the issue. ‘The PVV is critical of all aspects of society it considers to be the elite, and that includes senior judges,’ he said.

MPs will vote on the appointment next week but the PVV hopes it will be done on a name by name basis, meaning the party will be able to identify which MPs vote for or against Buruma.

The PVV has also called for a fixed five-year term for judges and says they should be reappointed on the basis of their record on sentencing.

So let me get this straight, again for the second time an openly biased judge will be allowed to rule on this case??? What kind of justice do you call that? Try throwing the entire case out because it should have never been brought up in the first place if this is truly a country of free speech! The way this political witch hunt has been going on, it sure is hell is not democracy but a banana republic international embarrassment!

@Sandra,

No, this is about appointing judges in the first place, not about this particular case. If you actually read the text above (or in Dutch if you can read it in the link) it is about appointing Professor Buruma as a Judge to the High Court.

The issue here is does a Judge have the right to express his opinion as an individual and does appointing Judges with no opinion mean you get no opinions in the end.

Personally, all the arguments against Buruma by the PVV can be thrown back at them mulitplied a dozen falled and forcing MPs to name who votes for who means that they can then target and then attack them. Shamefull.

SandraV.This judge has nothing to do with Wilders case.What gave you the idea he was?Widers is against him only because he is a left winger and as we all know Wilders intends to stamp any opposing PVV politics out.It's a classic case of get rid of your opposition.Hitler did the same thing.But what the real core of the problem is he called Wilders a fascist.
Boo Hoo Hoo

SandraV - Unless I am mistaken, he is only being appointed to be a judge, not be part of the Wilders case.

If so, it is sad to see a party trying to ban judges that might not agree with their highly controversial ideology.

Wilders opposing something!! gosh, imagine that :)

Interesting, since when respecting the law is a political issue.

"So let me get this straight, again for the second time an openly biased judge will be allowed to rule on this case???"

I don't actually think that likening Wilders and Mussolini necessarily suggest bias because they are particularly similar!

@SandraV Hear hear! Well said indeed!

@SandraV
Could not have said it better. The whole thing is ridiculous.

I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to say Sandra. It seems that you are confusing this with the "inciting hatred" charges against Wilders. Not a democracy? Judges are routinely appointed in democracies. As for the free speech comment ... would you feel the same way if the inciting of hatred was directed at you personally. Something like an islamic jihad for example. Still free speech? Or terrorism? I'm don't believe that we should allow "jihad" inciting speech as it can lead to unnecessary violence in society (or worse, terrorism). The same applies to Wilders most extreme comments. Hatred of another ethnic group always leads to violence and should not be tolerated. Period.

May we conclude from some of the comments that some people only read headlines?
And I am sure Wilders will beat the dust in this case (like in so many other cases).

People like to call Wilders names like fascist, nazi and so on. But there is something seriously wrong with a society that crucifies people just for telling the truth and pointing out facts. It is insane to base your opinions on wishful thinking and not reality. History will show Wilders as one of the few brave people who stood up against the liberal insanity that infests europe, for now.

i don't understand.

are opponents of PVV trying to be purposely ironic by calling wilders a nazi while defending a religion whos followers openly supported hitler during WWII?

By James Jacobs | March 11, 2011 12:48 AM

vb: history will show that he will disappear and become completely irrelevant very soon, just like the LPF and TON -and Hilter in his time. I sincerely hope you 'wake up' and smell the very important issues pressing on our society and on our world, namely the economy and the environment. And namely NOT bird feeding and headscarf's!

By Bill | March 11, 2011 6:50 AM

To vb, vernon, WoodsUK, thank you! Glad that you see what I see, a political Witchhunt from day one! Wilders is being persecuted for simply telling the truth in his own country and that is what this is all about. Wilders committed no crime!

By sandraV | March 11, 2011 8:57 AM

@Bill
I assure you I am quite awake, but thanks for your concern. I understand that some people are so conditioned in the ways of PC that they refuse to accept facts. And i assure you that there is much more to this issue than headscarves. I'm not meaning to insult you, but if you can't see the deeper meanings of this situation than I think instead of just dismissing people's concerns you should read more about the issue.

@sandraV
Don't let the pc police stifle your legitimate concerns.
