Minister not informed about defence equipment irregularities
Defence ministry officials gave defence minister Hans Hillen wrong information when they assured him in February that problems at the Den Helder naval equipment unit had been solved, the Volkskrant reports on Tuesday.
Hillens said in a note to MPs on Monday he is shocked at the continuing allegations and is angry that he had not been fully informed.
Following newspaper reports in February, the minister had assured parliament the problems were a one-off and had been solved.
Socialist MP Jasper van Dijk said it is unacceptable that the minister had not been brought up to date by his ‘own people’. ‘That is a very serious matter and we need an urgent explanation,’ he told news agency Novum.
It has now emerged that two offcers at a navy department in Den Helder have been disciplined for making improper use of military cars, fiddling their holiday entitlement and ‘undesirable behaviour’.
Prestigious unit
The disciplinary hearing followed a number of allegations centred on the prestigious CAMS Force Vision unit, where software and sea defence systems are developed.
Military police are now investigating further to establish if any more serious crimes have been committed.
In addition, the police are looking into another incident relating to navy operations in Den Helder which is not connected to the Force Vision unit, Novum said.
