Education minister Marja van Bijsterveldt told parliament on Tuesday she wants the Cito primary school leaving test to be extended to all schools and the date pushed back to later in the year.

The test is currently used by 85% of the country’s primary schools and takes place in February. It is designed to check spelling and arithmetic and forms the basis for the advice offered by primary schools as to which secondary school pupils should attend.
The minister wants to make Cito mandatory for all schools and to hold it between April 15 and May 15, according to press reports.
The new Cito rules would be introduced in the school year 2012-2013.
The new date would mean that teachers would be given a stronger role in determining what sort of secondary education is suitable for their pupils.
Cito is a private company.
