Amsterdam targets 600 repeat offenders

Amsterdam police, justice ministry officials and city council staff have drawn up a list of 600 persistent trouble makers and criminals whom they plan to ‘remove’ from the streets, the Parool reports on Thursday.

The 600 have all been arrested at least five times over the past five years and in total have been picked up 15,000 times in connection with a variety of crimes, the paper says.
Police and councils hope a targeted approach, involving fast-track trials, individual youth workers, and possibly preventative detention, will keep them on the straight and narrow.
Once they have appeared in court, the authorities ‘will not let them go again until they are on the right track,’ mayor Eberhard van der Laan is quoted as saying.
Families will also get special attention to try and stop siblings following in their brothers’ footsteps.
