Ajax chairman calls for end to Jew nickname
Wednesday 23 March 2011
The chairman of Amsterdam football club Ajax has called on supporters to stop describing themselves as Jews following the row over the behaviour of ADO Den Haag player Lex Immers.
Ajax supporters are traditionally known as Joden, although opinion is divided about the origins.
However, the use of the word has led to a number of racist incidents. And during a supporters party celebrating Ado’s 3-2 victory over Ajax this weekend, Immers joined in singing which referred to going on a hunt for Jews.
He later said he regretted his actions and had been caught up in the euphoria of victory.
Uri Colonel, who is himself Jewish, says in an interview in the Telegraaf he has been trying to discourage the use of the word Jew as a nickname for fans for years.
