‘Without a senate majority, the country will still be governed’

Even without a majority in the senate, the governing alliance will be able to negotiate with other parties to get legislation passed, the upper house’s chairman RenĂ© van der Linden told television current affairs programme Buitenhof on Sunday.

There is no risk of the Netherlands being faced with the ‘Belgian situation’, Van der Linden said, referring to the fact that Belgium has been without a government for over 250 days.
Earlier this month, prime minister Mark Rutte said the Netherlands would become ungovernable if the alliance failed to win a majority of seats in the senate.
The Netherlands goes to the polls on Wednesday to elect 12 new provincial councils. The results of that vote are used to determine the make-up of the upper house of parliament.
At the moment, opinion polls indicate the VVD, CDA, PVV alliance will not control more than half the 75 seats.
