Thousands rally in The Hague against government cuts

Some 10,000 civil servants, teachers, healthcare workers and other protestors gathered in central The Hague on Thursday to demonstrate against government cuts, according to union estimates.

The cabinet wants to shave billions of euros off public spending in order to help balance the books in the wake of the economic crisis. The Abvakabo public sector workers union says up to 110,000 jobs could be under threat.
Civil servants also used the demonstration to protest at home affairs minister Piet Hein Donner’s insistence on a pay freeze. They want a 2% rise.
Donner is due to address the rally later in the afternoon.
Some 15,000 students and university lecturers demonstrated against the planned cuts in spending on higher education last month.
