Legal aid lawyers furious at halving of fee

Legal aid lawyers are furious at government plans to cut their fee for the first three days of a client’s detention from €168 a day to just €84.

‘This is an insane proposal,’ said Geertjan van Oosten, secretary of the criminal law association NVSA in the Volkskrant.
‘The European Court has told the Netherlands to make sure suspects get legal support when being questioned. Now the justice ministry comes with this… lawyers will earn less than supermarket workers,’ he said.
‘The bottom line is that the police do not want lawyers looking at what they are doing,’ he said. ‘The government has a dual agenda’.
