Hundreds of Dutch nationals in North African hot spots

Hundreds of Dutch nationals are currently living in Middle East and North African countries where anti-government protests have broken out, the foreign ministry told the Telegraaf on Monday afternoon.

In Libya, 172 Dutch nationals are registered with the embassy, in Bahrain 220, Algeria 198, Iran 155 and Yemen 50. Most are expats and their families although Yemen has a large number of aid workers.
In Morocco there are officially 500 Dutch nationals but the ministry says the real figure is far higher because most Dutch Moroccans don’t bother to report to the consular authorities.
The foreign ministry has issued an avoid all travel warning for Libya because of the violent clashes there.
