Fewer people apply for asylum

Some 13,300 people applied for asylum in the Netherlands last year, 11% down on 2009, the national statistics office CBS said on Wednesday.

Around half of them came from Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq. Nevertheless, the number of Somali asylum seekers was down by 2,500 on 2009 at 3,400.
Since tough new rules were introduced in 2003, the number of asylum seekers coming to the Netherlands has remained between 10,000 and 15,000, the CBS said.
