State gambling monopoly Holland Casino may be sold off

The cabinet is to look seriously at selling the Holland Casino group, the state-owned gambling monopoly, junior finance minister Frans Weekers said on Wednesday.

Speaking during a debate on privatisation, Weekers told MPs: ‘We are looking at privatisation. It is not taboo.’
In order to guarantee that the company would continue to work to counteract gambling addition and money laundering, the sale should not lead to the creation of a private monopoly, the minister said.
And any private owner which did not deal properly with addiction and criminal money could have its licence withdrawn.
The cabinet is to present its new policy on gambling in March.
Holland Casino has 14 operations in the Netherlands and contributed €164m to government coffers in 2009.
