Dutchman to head European financial markets regulator

Steven Maijoor, a director at the Dutch securities board AFM, has been chosen as chairman of the new European financial markets regulator ESMA.


Maijoor is currently head of financial reporting and market integrity suprvision at the AFM and a part time professor at both Maastricht and Amsterdam’s VU universities.
If his appointment is backed by the European parliament, Maijoor told the Financial Times he would be privileged to do the job. ‘ESMA has been given significantly powerful and innovative tools to intensify a network approach to supervision,’ he was quoted as saying.
Earlier, it was announced that AFM chairman Hans Hoogervoorst is to leave in July to take over as chairman of the International Accounting Standards Board.
