6.5 million m2 of offices are empty

The Netherlands has some 6.5 million square metres of empty offices – almost 14% of the total, according to research by real estate group DTZ Zadelhoff.

‘Much too much has been built, there is no increase in the number of office jobs, the number of square metres per person is reducing and intensity of use is going up,’ director Cuno van Steenhoven told Nos tv.
Steenhoven says it would be irresponsible to build any more offices before a decision has been taken on what to do with the empty space. He called on the government to take the initiative to restore balance to the sector.
