Wikileaks: Shell claimed to have infiltrated Nigerian government
Thursday 09 December 2010
Anglo Dutch oil giant Shell claimed it had inserted staff into all the main ministries of the Nigerian government, according to a leaked US diplomatic cable quoted in the Guardian newspaper.
The paper says the company's top executive in Nigeria told US diplomats Shell had seconded employees to every relevant department and so knew ‘everything that was being done in those ministries’.
The cables, posted by Wikileaks, show the oil firm swapped intelligence with the US and asked if Nigerian militants had acquired anti-aircraft missiles, the paper said
Shell declined to comment on the claims, saying the Guardian would not give it access to the cable or enough time to check the facts

It was quite telling that today's Het Financieele Dagblad, which purports to be an independent financial newspaper, consigned the Shell story to page 9. Worried about offending its owners, who have large shareholdinggs in 'de Olies', or Shell as we know it?
