Speed limit can go up next March

The speed limit can go up to 130 kph on some roads next March, transport minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen told MPs during the debate on her ministry’s spending plans on Wednesday evening.

Coalition partners VVD and PVV had called for a January start date, but the minister said she could not yet say which roads will be cleared for faster traffic. Noise and environmental pollution limits must still be taken into account, the minister said.
In particular, the speed limit could be increased at night or during quiet parts of the day, the minister said. Germany, Luxembourg, Austria and Denmark already allow faster driving, she pointed out.

The minister also said she would look into calls from the VVD for a toll bridge to be built between Amsterdam and Almere. In particular, pension funds had expressed an interest in investing in it, the minister said.
According to the Telegraaf, opposition MPs were angry the minister did not immediately rule out the PVV’s suggestion that a new motorway be built on green belt land between Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
