Social security fraudsters to lose benefits for three months

People who commit social security benefit fraud are to lose their benefits for three months, home affairs minister Henk Kamp told MPs on Thursday.

Kamp was speaking during a parliamentary debate on his ministry’s spending plans for 2011.
The benefit stop will apply to everyone and that means less relevance will be attached to the claimant’s personal circumstances, Kamp said.
A tough approach to fraud is part of the new government’s approach to social security, he said.
On Wednesday it emerged that people claiming welfare (bijstand) will be required to do socially-useful unpaid work in return for benefits. This could be clearing snow or pouring coffee in an old people’s home, the minister said.
