Slow student fee debate to be reopened

Parliament is to hold a second debate with junior education minister Halbe Zijlstra next week to discuss the government’s plans to reform higher education funding.

The cabinet wants to hit students who take too long to complete their degrees with extra fees of up to €3,000 a year. The increase would be introduced next academic year and affect students who are already mid course.
But Roelof de Wijkerslooth, head of Radboud University says in Thursday’s NRC that the measure may well be unconstitutional, forcing the debate to be reopened.
