Rotterdam wants to cut benefits if claimants refuse to work

Rotterdam council executive Dominic Schrijer wants to cut welfare benefit payments to claimants who are unwilling to work, news agency ANP reports on Thursday.

The idea is included in a new plan to encourage the long term jobless to get back into work. Local authorities are responsible for welfare benefits (bijstand).
Schrijer did not say how much he would like to cut benefits if claimants refuse to cooperate.
On Wednesday, coalition party MPs said they would press the government to include a ‘work for welfare’ element in national benefit policy.
