Dutch Rail (NS) and rail network management company ProRail have spent €140m improving information provision to passengers since 2001, RTL television news reports.

The broadcaster bases its claims on an analysis of NS and ProRail documents. Both companies are state-owned.
Although a new system, named Infoplus, was launched in 2002, it is still not operating nationwide, RTL said. Where Infoplus has been installed, there are frequent breakdowns and other problems.
NS and ProRail plan to spend a further €34m completing the system by the end of next year, bringing the total cost to €142m.
On Tuesday, NS CEO Bert Meerstadt said he wanted to take over the provision of passenger information. Responsibility is currently split between the two firms and they have come under fire from travellers and MPs in recent weeks for poor information provision during the wintry weather.
