Bergen opposed to gas storage plans

Opposition is mounting in the Noord-Holland town of Bergen to plans to store natural gas in the Bergermeer region, Nos tv reports.

The economic affairs ministry says the scheme is a core part of efforts to turn the Netherlands into an international gas storage and distribution centre.
If it goes ahead, the Bergermeer project will be the biggest natural gas storage facility on the continent, with over four billion cubic metres of gas – enough to supply 1.6 million Dutch households for a year.
But locals argue the project is not safe and will increase the risk of earthquakes. The government’s macro-economic policy bureau CPB also has doubts about the financial underpinnings.
Noord-Holland province and nearby towns of Alkmaar, Schermer and Heiloo have already given their green light to the project.
