Winter sets in, for a few days at least

Snow is set to fall over most of the country on Tuesday but Wednesday will be cold and sunny, weather forecasters said on Monday.

Although temperatures during the day will remain around freezing, it will feel much colder in the strong easterly winds, forecasters say.
There may also be more snow showers on Wednesday evening, when temperatures will drop again at night.

Skating

In Friesland, the local water board has stopped a large number of the provinces’ 900 pumps from working to give ice forming on canals and lakes time to grow. The board has also introduced a ban on sailing on all but important trade routes.
Meanwhile, the first outdoor skating marathon on natural ice is set to take place in Noordlaren in Groningen province on Monday evening.
The ice on the artificial track was 3.5 cm thick on Monday morning, allowing the Dutch skating association to give the go ahead.
