Scrap deadline for prosecuting violent crime, say MPs

The public prosecution department should be able to try violent and sex crimes whenever a suspect is found, not just within a given number of years, according to a majority of MPs.

They want justice minister Ivo Opstelten to amend the rules on limits to legal liability to cover more than just murder. At the moment only crimes where the maximum sentence is life have no limit on when they can be prosecuted.
The change has been prompted by a former anti-apartheid activist who admitted earlier this month he had been involved in three arson attacks on the Makro food wholesale group in the 1980s.
