Nearly 250 civil servants can use a chauffeur-driven car

Nearly 250 senior civil servants have a chauffeur-driven car at their disposal, the Telegraaf reports on Tuesday.

Audi, Mercedes and Volvo are popular brands for civil service vehicles, the paper says, without saying how many cars the government fleet actually consists off.
For example, the tax office has 10 cars on call, while the head of the KNMI weather bureau is also chauffeur-driven, the paper says.
The home affairs and justice ministries share a pool of cars.
Last week, it emerged the defence ministry has a fleet of 37 cars to take generals and other army chiefs around.
Hero Brinkman, MP for the anti-Islam PVV, said the government could cut the number of cars. ‘Two per ministry and one per service is more than enough,’ Brinkman told the paper, adding that he would like to see senior civil servants use public transport or bikes.
