Groningen province puts conditions on CO2 storage

Groningen´s provincial government has passed a motion agreeing to cooperate with trials to store excess CO2 in empty underground gas chambers under very strict conditions, Nos tv reports.

Resistance to the plan is mounting in both Groningen and Drenthe provinces, Nos says. Three sites are under investigation – Eleveld in Drenthe and Sebaldeburen and Boerakker in Groningen.
Earlier this month, economic affairs minister Maxime Verhagen said he is scrapping plans to store the greenhouse gas under the town of Barendrecht near Rotterdam, partly due to public resistance.
Nos says Groningen politicians were shocked when the minister said objections in the northern provinces would not hold sway.
