Government gets tough on ‘perpetual students’

Students who take too long to get their degrees will soon have to pay an extra €3,000 in fees for every extra year they take, Nos tv reports, quoting from unpublished government documents.

The new rules will apply from next year and affect everyone who has run up a delay in their college or university degree course. Now, the government expects most students to complete their bachelor’s and master’s degrees within five years.
Universities and colleges will also have their government funding cut if students take too long.
Students taking master’s degrees, or studying economics, languages and cultural studies are most prone to take too long, the government documents say.
