Fewer coffee shops as new rules begin to bite

The Netherlands had 666 licenced cafes where small quantities of cannabis can be bought freely at the end of last year, down from 702 in 2007, news agency ANP reports.
I

in Rotterdam, 16 cafes, known as coffee shops, were shut down because they were too close to schools. And in the border towns of Bergen op Zoom and Roosendaal, all coffee shops were closed as part of efforts to stop drugs tourism.
If the schools rule was applied across the country, a further 94 coffee shops would have to close, the researchers, from Groningen University, said.
The new government, which wants to introduce passes for coffee shops, also wants to extend the school rule from 250 metres to 350 metres which will force even more closures.
