Cheating students face clampdown over living allowance

Students caught claiming a live-out allowance when they still live at home will have to pay back the money they have wrongly be given as well as a 50% fine, junior education minister Halbe Zijlstra said on Friday.

If students are caught lying that they live away from home for a second time, they will lose all their student grant and have to repay all the cash they have had, the minister said.
Students who live with their parents get a basic grant of €95 but students who live away from home get €266. Some 270,000 hbo college and university students claim a live-out grant.
Earlier research showed some 40,000 students are wrongly claiming the bigger amount, defrauding the taxpayer of between €30m and €80m a year.
