Tilburg vicar banned from early morning bell ringing

Tilburg vicar Harm Schilder has been banned from ringing the bells of the Holy Margarita Maria church in Tilburg at 07.15 every weekday morning.

On Wednesday a magistrate’s court in Breda ruled in favour of the city council, which said the bells are too loud.
Last year the council brought in an 80 decibel limit for church bells before 07.30am. The dispute with Schilder has being going on since 2007 at least.
The minister argues the right to call the faithful to prayer is part of the right to freedom of religion.
