The Netherlands slides to 17th in equality index

The Netherlands has fallen from 9th to 17th place in the latest Global Gender Gap Index, produced by the World Economic Forum.

While the Netherlands scores very well in terms of education levels and life expectancy, it performs poorly in terms of political participation, the index shows.
The new Dutch government will have just four female ministers and junior ministers out of a total 20.

The Netherlands also lags behind the top performers in terms of equal pay and in female representation in managerial positions in industry.
Iceland has the narrowest gap between the genders, overtaking Norway to take the top spot. Finland and Sweden are third and fourth.
Bottom of the rankings is Jemen.
The index is based on an assessment of 134 countries and looks at economic participation, education, political empowerment and health.
