New cabinet meets for the first time

Mark Rutte’s new minority cabinet met for the first time on Thursday morning, to formally divide up tasks.

It is the first time since 1918 that the Netherlands has had a Liberal prime minister and the first time it has had a minority cabinet since before World War II.
Later, the ministers were sworn in by queen Beatrix and posed for their traditional photo on the palace steps.
Speed limit
Transport and environment minister Melanie Schults van Haegen said she was very pleased the two portfolios fall under one ministry. ‘We have to get the Netherlands moving again, but in a responsible manner,’ she said.
It is also‘very important’ that the speed limit on some motorways is raised to 130 kph, she said.
Jan Kees de Jager, who remains in the finance ministry job, said his new colleagues have to be aware that finances are tight. ‘We have to make savings to get the treasury back under control,’ he told reporters.
The new minority cabinet between the VVD Liberals and the Christian Democrats will rely on the anti-Islam PVV to give it a majority of just one in parliament.
