Management crisis at newspaper group Mecom as CEO quits

Regional newspaper publisher Wegener is embroiled in a management crisis following the surprise departure of CEO Joop Munsterman on Monday, the Financieele Dagblad reports.

The only other member of the management board, Wil Cornelisse, registered as sick on Monday and Sylvia Böcker, who oversaw the company’s digital publishing strategy has also quit, the paper says.
Wegener, which is owned by British media group Mecom, said in a statement that Munsterman had gone because of ‘a difference of opinion over policy’ with the majority shareholder. Both sides have been sworn to silence, the paper says.
New boss
The chairman of Mecom Norway and Poland, Truis Velgaard, has been nominated to take over as CEO.
Mecom’s own founder, David Montgomery, was forced out last month by a group of influential British shareholders. He will stand down in January.
Wegener was taken over by Mecom in 2007 and has been hit hard by the downturn in newspaper advertising.
