Go home Tanja and you won’t be prosecuted, says Colombia

Dutch woman Tanja Nijmeijer, who has been fighting with Farc guerillas in Colombia since 2002, will not be prosecuted if she leaves the movement and returns to the Netherlands, Colombian deputy president Angelino Garzon told Nos tv.

Garzon said he did not understand why the 32-year-old is still with the rebels. Last month, an important Farc leader was killed in a government raid and for a time it was thought Nijmeijer was among the casualties.
‘The best thing she can do is go back to her family,’ Garzon said. ‘Then she can count on the support of the people and government of Colombia.’
At the weekend, the president’s website carried an email from a Farc leader which stated that Nijmeijer is being used to get international attention for Farc.
‘Amid all the tragedies, the appearance of Alexandra [Tanja’s new name] is good news. The idea to let her work with the international commission is fantastic,’ Radio Netherlands quoted a Farc official as saying.
‘There she will be able to make an important contribution to Farc, given her abilities and professional education in languages and also her training here with us and her well-known sacrifices and victory and, moreover, the impact this news would cause.’
The email was accompanied by a number of photographs of her, but it is unclear when they were taken.
Nijmeijer made headlines in July 2007 when her diary was found during a military raid on a Farc camp. In the diaries she wrote that she was tired of her life in the jungle.
