Councils lax on monitoring ‘their’ football spending

Local councils pay very little attention to the financial affairs of their local football clubs, even if they are financially involved with them, according to research by Nos tv.

Nos approached officials in the 33 towns and cities where professional football clubs are located and found that in half of cases there is some local government support for the sport.
But only six of the councils actually monitor their club’s financial affairs, by requesting quarterly reports or a seat on the board, Nos said. The survey was anonymous.
Dubious
In addition, three officials reported they were concerned that ‘dubious’ investors may have become involved in their club.
None of the officials interviewed said a cut in spending on football would be part of their council cutbacks, despite large reductions in their budgets.
Tilburg and Maastricht city councils are among those which have recently been involved in bailing out their local football clubs.
