Amsterdam quiet after squatters’ riots

Amsterdam is quiet again after a night of disturbances involving squatters, a police spokesman told news agency ANP on Saturday afternoon.

Trouble broke out on Friday evening after squatters took over a building on Spuistraat in the city centre, following a demonstration.
The demonstration was called in protest at the ban on squatting which came into effect on Friday.
Some 200 squatters were involved in the clashes with riot police, erecting barricades and starting fires, eyewitnesses said. Two police officers were injured.
