80% of collected plastic waste is recycled, not 50%

Up to 80% of the plastic waste collected for recycling in the Netherlands is re-used, according to the Nedvang association, which helps local authories with recycling packaging.

Earlier, the CEO of waste processing group Van Gansewinkel had claimed 50% of plastic waste is burnt in German incinerators.
A spokesman for Ruud Sondag said the difference is due to a misunderstanding in the way the figures are interpreted.
‘He meant to say that 50% of the plastic collected for recycling is reprocessed, 20% is burnt and 30% is used to make products with limited environmental value,’ a spokesman for the Van Gansewinkel group told news agency ANP.
The problem led Sondag to suggest that high value plastics should be given a marker – or cheap micro chip – which can be used to indentify materials to be recycled.
