Top Irish criminal arrested in Amstelveen

Wednesday 01 September 2010

An Irish national arrested in Amstelveen last week is a top criminal suspected of involvement in at least one murder, the Parool reports on Wednesday.

John Traynor, 62, has been on the run for 18 years. He was sentenced to seven years in jail in England for fraud in 1992 but failed to return after a weekend's compassionate leave.

Since then he has lived abroad, spending several years in Amstelveen, the paper says.

Arrest

The Parool says according to one report, Traynor was picked up after a joint operation between the Dutch and British police.

However, the paper says, another report says he was arrested because of problems with his papers when he attempted to hire a care.

His lawyer, who is not named, declined to comment.

Some claim he ordered the 1996 murder of Irish journalist Veronica Guerin.
