Tearing up train timetable ‘a fiasco’

A Dutch Rail (NS) experiment involving running peak period train services without a timetable threatens to turn into a fiasco, the Volkskrant reports on Tuesday.

The paper says commuters are complaining about the large number of delays, full trains and missed connections since the official time table was torn up on two busy routes.
The experiment began on September 6. For one month six inter city trains an hour are operating between Eindhoven and Amsterdam and six trains an hour between Utrecht and Geldermalsen. In theory this means passengers who miss a train will have to wait no more than 10 minutes for the next one.
But even though there are more trains, commuters say they now find themselves standing the entire journey because the trains themselves are shorter. And others have to leave home earlier to get to the office on time because the trains no longer connect with other services.
NS officials had an emergency meeting with passenger representatives on Monday and have now decided to increase train capacity, the paper said.
