Maastricht city council has nominated VVD member and former Brabant provincial councillor Onno Hoes, 49, to become the city’s new mayor.

The choice was unanimous, ending a long tradition of Christian Democrat mayors in the southern city.
Hoes, who said he is very honoured by the nomination, is married to tv gossip show presenter and musical producer Albert Verlinde.
The posting still has to technically be approved by the cabinet and queen.
Hoes replaces Gerd Leers who resigned in January after losing city council support because of a conflict of interest over his Bulgarian holiday home.
